Graffiti is something that is usually seen as random spray paint on abandoned walls, trains, or really any other surface where these “street artists” can get their name out.  Banksy, however, uses street art as bold statements criticizing our society.  He remains anonymous, with no intention of revealing his identity for however long he can make it stay this way.

He uses this method as a medium to reach the most amount of people possible.  He’s been quoted as saying “Bus stops are far more interesting and useful places to have art than in museums. Graffiti has more chance of meaning something or changing stuff than anything indoors. Graffiti has been used to start revolutions, stop wars, and generally is the voice of people who aren’t listened to. Graffiti is one of those few tools you have if you have almost nothing. And even if you don’t come up with a picture to cure world poverty you can make somebody smile while they’re having a piss.”

Banksy has become to be a powerful artist around the world.  His work has appeared in America, Australia, Canada, England, France, Israel, Jamaica, and Palestine.

As many graffiti artists are, he is very anti-brands.  He doesn’t believe it’s right to be making all these statements against the problems in our world, which he has said he believes comes mostly from capitalism, and then make money from doing so.

A lot of his work includes rats, apes, policemen, soldiers, children, and the elderly in a humorous way that sometimes are used in conjunction with slogans.  His work focuses on many political and social themes, which is why he can be something to draw inspiration from when making signage for our debt fence.

Banksy has been quoted as saying “Any advert in a public space that gives you no choice whether you see it or not is yours.  It’s yours to take, re-arrange and re-use.  You can do whatever you like with it.  Asking for permission is like asking to keep a rock someone just threw at your head.”  I think this quote is also appropriate for our debt fence.  People on campus are going to see our project whether they choose to or not, and I think that’s extremely important for our message.  The issue at hand is something a lot of people either don’t want to or don’t know how to talk about it.  We can only hope that all of our efforts will help this problem.

Banksy is one of the world’s most well-known street artists, even though he insists on remaining anonymous.  Although his pieces of art are powerful and influential, he still does not take the credit he deserves.  The following is a clip from one of his documentaries, Exit Through the Gift Shop, and if you watch the part from 1:13-1:25, you can see exactly what I mean.
